Building Skills to Support Student Flexibility and
Understanding of Math Strategies

Forward and Backward number word sequence — starting from any number and continuing the count; counting by 2’s, 5’s, 10’s, 3’s... from any number forward or backward.

Numeral Identification — reading random numerals: 15, 51, 109, 409,016 & 3,720,008, without saying the letter “o” for the numeral "0" or saying the word “and”

Knowing combinations of numbers — say or write all the ways to make the number 5: 0+5, 1+4, 2+3, 3+2, 4+1, 5+0

Knowing Doubles and doubles +1, -1 — 2+2, 9+9, 50+50, 300+300

Using knowledge of 5 & 10 — Example: 35-17 = ?  I know 17 is the same as 10+5+2 so if I take 10 away from 35 I have 25 then if I take 5 away from 25 I have 20 then if I count back 2 from 20 I have the answer 18.
