LoppetThe City of Lakes Ski Foundation is excited to bring a Cross-country Ski program to Loring Community School.  This new program connects with our mission to promote and support Nordic skiing in the Minneapolis area,  especially among inner-city youth.

Through the support of the Medica Foundation and our Ski Foundation, we will provide an 8 week ski and nutrition program to Loring students in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. Due to space limitations, this will include one class from each of these grade levels.  Rossignol and the Ski Foundation provide the cross-country equipment for students to use and the skis will be stored right at the school.  Our staff will groom sections of the available green space adjacent to the school so students can ski right from the school door!

Monday classes will begin on November 23rd and continue through December and January.  On February 6th, ski students will be invited to show off their new skills by participating in the Minne-Loppet Kids Ski Event as part of the Loppet weekend.

Foundation coaches will also join in an exciting new collaborative effort with Kids Cook Classroom volunteers to emphasize the importance of nutrition in the building of strong and healthy skiers.  Kids Cook will teach students and their parents healthy, basic cooking classes during the winter.  All 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students are invited to participate.  The ski program will close with a celebration dinner for the students and their families that participate in the Minne-Loppet race.

From the Gym to the Cross-Country Ski Trails.......
Get Ready, Set and Ski!

Next week we will try on our ski boots and get fit for our poles during our first ski class with the Nordic Ski Foundation!  During our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade Monday morning P.E. classes we will learn to ski with the foundation coaches.  These ski lessons will be shared with other students.
During our classes we will review Kids Cook Classroom tips for better nutrition and healthy bodies.  Each week students can read and learn about these lessons from posters in our gymnasium and lunchroom.
Thanks to City of Lakes Nordic Foundation and Medica for this opportunity for Loring students!
